Organisations taking tourists to Antarctica work within a framework of policies developed within the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), guided by the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (the Madrid Protocol), which stipulates a suite of permitted and prohibited activities on land (such as the minimum distances that tourists may approach penguins or seals). It is unlikely that at current levels this tightly regulated tourism will have any significant negative impacts on the environment or wildlife of BAT. However, the number of tourist vessels operating in Antarctica is set to increase significantly and so there are plans to develop a science-based conservation plan for increased tourism activities to minimise any negative impacts while promoting environmental awareness that these trips bring to tourists.

Visitors explore Brown Bluff area, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, as autumn conditions return.
